Go-To Green Smoothie

I started drinking smoothies in college. I had just gotten a mini blender for the kitchen in my apartment and was looking for good ways to put it to use. Enter: the smoothie phase. I played with all kinds of smoothie combinations. Some simple, some complex, some delicious and others that were visually unappetizing.

When I heard about people adding a dose of greens to their smoothies, I wanted to see what the hype was about but I was apprehensive to say the least. I got started by adding baby spinach and was oh so pleasantly surprised that it was almost entirely undetectable. It was a total smoothie game changer for me and I started playing around with other leafy greens and flavors, drinking a new green smoothie everyday.

This is the recipe for my go-to green smoothie - the tried and true combo that I always reach for in a pinch and keep coming back to time and time again. It's a great smoothie to start out with if you're a greens-drinking newbie because besides the color, you won't even realize that there's spinach underneath that dreamy peanut butter and banana flavor.

Make sure to read the notes section of the recipe for my blender pro tips.

  • 1 cup almond milk

  • 1 cup spinach, packed

  • 1 ripe banana, frozen and sectioned

  • 1 tbsp peanut butter

  • pinch of cinnamon

  1. Place all ingredients in blender and blend on high speed until fully incorporated.

  • I'm not usually a stickler for format but the order of the ingredients in the blender matter here. You want to make sure that you're not putting too much stress on the blender (especially if it's not a particularly sturdy model) and that the spinach will blend up nicely. Use the following order for this recipe (moving from closest to blender blades to furthest away): milk, spinach, bananas, peanut butter, cinnamon.

  • You can use this recipe as a home base and play with different combinations of plant milks, greens and nut butters to change the flavor profile. If you're working with a blender that isn't particularly sturdy or powerful, try sticking with spinach as it will blend the easiest.
